Structured and Freeform Surfaces play an increasingly important role in many technology advancements ranging from optics to biomedical and energy applications. The functional characteristics of such surfaces supersede those of “traditional” surfaces, thus opening research and development avenues and new challenges for their specification, fabrication, measurement and verification.

The next euspen Special Interest Group (SIG) on Structured and Freeform Surfaces meeting will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry and government agencies to discuss state-of-the-art practice, and key research and development in the area of precision engineering associated with structured and freeform surfaces. The meeting includes keynote presentations, oral sessions, posters and training seminars covering the newest developments and research on structured and freeform surfaces.

The local hosts and organizing committee for the Special Interest Group meeting on Structured Freeform Surfaces are :- Prof Nabil Anwer and Dr Charyar Mehdi-Souzani from ENS Cachan; Dr Hichem Nouira from LNE; Prof Richard Leach from University of Nottingham;  Dr Ludger Koenders from PTB and Prof Guido Todello from DTU

The Structured Freeform Surfaces meeting chair is Prof Richard Leach from University of Nottingham

A special focus will be given to research fields in the following topics:

Replication Techniques

  • Replication processes (moulding, imprinting, embossing, …)
  • 3D micro-additive manufacturing technologies
  • Replication assessment and tolerance verification

Structured Surfaces to Affect Function

  • Structured surfaces characterization, combining structured and freeform geometries

Precision Freeform Surfaces

Large-Scale Surface Structuring

Surfaces for Nano-manufacturing and Metrology

  • Dimensional metrology at of nanoscale surfaces and structures

Meeting Keynotes & SOTAs

Professor Feng Zhou Fang has over 30 years’ experience in working in manufacturing science and technology. He was responsible for setting up the Centre of Micro/nano Manufacturing Technology (MNMT) at Tianjin University in 2005. MNMT has been recognised as a leading manufacturing research organization in the world. He has managed a large number of national, international, and industry funded research projects. His specialist areas of interest include micro/nano manufacturing, optical freeform manufacturing, medical device/implants manufacturing, ultra-precision manufacturing and metrology.

Tobias Binkele is a PhD student at the University of Bremen and the University of Applied Sciences Bremen. Before he started with his PhD work he received his Bachelor degree in the international course of Engineering and Applied Physics and his Master degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Applied Sciences Bremen. His PhD work is focused on the non-contact gradient based measurement of freeform surfaces.

Prof Maxence Bigerelle,  Université de Valenciennes, France

PD. Dr.-Ing Matthias Worgull received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 and became associate professor (Privatdozent) in 2010 at KIT Expertise and coaching domains: Physical behavior on thermoplastic, biodegradable and functional Polymers (Lectures at KIT) and Structuring by Replication with the focus on Hot embossing, Nanoimprint and Roll-to-Roll structuring. Author of Book “Hot embossing – Theory of microreplication” – Elsevier 2009 Collaborative Research Track Record: Matthias was involved in various EU-funded collaborative research projects (4M, COTECH, EUMINAFAB)

Further he’s one of the responsible scientists in ACTMOST and ACTPHAST projects dealing with polymers and surface structuring. He is also head of the replication cluster of hot embossing and nanoimprint at the Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility (KNMF) of KIT.

Track Record: Matthias is involved in the development of so-called “smart” surfaces for optical applications, e.g. tuning of optical systems and 3D structures on large scale for optical systems. The focus is set to large scale patterning using shape memory polymers and modified replication technologies. Beyond thermoplastic polymers and biodegradable materials the structuring of glass and low temperature metals is investigated and performed. Matthias is also involved in research projects of light guidance of OLEDS and the increase of the performance of PV-modules using biomimetic surfaces. Dr. Michael Schulz was awarded the Diploma in physics in 1983 and the doctor’s degree in natural sciences in 1988 by the University of Paderborn, Germany. Since 1990, he has been working at the PTB in the field of transfer function measurement technique for classical systems like lenses and innovative electronic still picture cameras, wavefront aberration measurements, ultra-precise optical measurements including flatness of high-quality flats. He is head of the form- and wavefront metrology working group of PTB. He was coordinator of the European project “Optical and tactile metrology for absolute form characterisation”. His current focus is on optical high accuracy asphere and freeform measurement.
