Laboratory of Ultra-precise Coordinate Measurements
VTT MIKES is the National Metrology Institute of Finland. VTT MIKES is a metrology facility for SI unit realisations, high-accuracy measurements, measurement innovations and calibration technologies. It provides high-end measurement innovations, capabilities and tools for demonstrating quality of measurements, and worldwide recognised measurements and calibrations.

The visit will include several dimensional metrology laboratories within a state-of-the-art metrology building. The laboratories include primary interferometry, nanometrology, angle and form metrology, and coordinate measurement laboratories. The visit also covers the properties and solutions required to establish a state-of-the-art metrology institute. The main focus is on vibration and temperature control.

- Flywheel manufacturing from scratch to full containerized system
Tour 3: Aalto University Research Laboratories
Location: TBC
Date: 18th June 2027
Start time of tour: 09:15am (transport provided)
Maximum capacity of 60 participants
Aalto University is a multidisciplinary university of science, technology, business and arts, with its main campus in Otaniemi, Espoo. Its School of Engineering and School of Electrical Engineering run large-scale research laboratories where fundamental research, industrial collaboration and teaching meet. The laboratories cover topics from autonomous vehicles and electric drives to full-scale rotors and metal additive manufacturing.

The visit will include six research laboratories on the Otaniemi campus. The main focus is on experimental research infrastructure: how full-scale test rigs, vehicles and machines are used to study autonomy, electrification, energy conversion and the performance of materials.

Autonomy and mobility lab – Research on autonomous vehicles and mobile machines. The lab operates the research car A!ex, equipped with lidar and cameras for testing self-driving in Finnish winter conditions, vehicle connectivity and remote operation.
ePowerHub – A 230 m² laboratory for electric machines and power-electronic converters for renewable energy and transportation, with test supplies up to 750 kVA and equipment for characterising magnetic materials.
Combustion engines – Research on cleaner combustion with alternative and dual fuels, combining fuel-spray experiments and optical engine studies with advanced flow and combustion simulation.
Hydraulics – The Fluid Power Laboratory studies energy-efficient hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Its laboratory hall has three machine beds, a 10-tonne gantry crane and a hydraulic power supply driven by three 75 kW motors.
Rotating machinery – The Aalto ARotor Lab is a full-scale rotor laboratory that can manufacture and investigate rotors of up to 25,000 kg, covering rotordynamics, geometry and vibration measurement, condition monitoring and bearings.
Materials to products – Research on engineering materials made by advanced and sustainable manufacturing, including metal additive manufacturing, casting, welding and the effects of hydrogen on metals.
