Travel
By Air
By plane, you can reach Erfurt-Weimar Airport, which is only 40 kilometres from Ilmenau. From here, travel to Erfurt main station and take the train to Ilmenau.
If you are flying from overseas, Frankfurt Airport or Halle/Leipzig Airport are the best options. From here, you can also get to Ilmenau by train.
By Car
The TU Ilmenau can be reached by car via the A71 motorway. Coming from the north on the A4, take the A71 towards Schweinfurt at the Erfurt motorway junction. After about 30 kilometres, leave the motorway at the Ilmenau-Ost exit and follow the signs to “Universität” at the first roundabout. Coming from the south from the direction of Nuremberg/Schweinfurt, take the motorway exit Ilmenau-West in the direction of Ilmenau and follow the signs to “Universität”.
By Train
By train, you can reach Erfurt from all directions with the ICE. From here, there is a regular shuttle service to Ilmenau and back. Careful the train from Erfurt to Ilmenau consists of two parts, one heads to Saalfeld one to Ilmenau. Make sure you enter the correct one; the destination is displayed on the train itself.
Social
The Goethe and university town of Ilmenau has a lot to offer. Located in the middle of the green Thuringian Forest, it combines nature, industry and culture. A combination of tradition and modernity has created a very special townscape over the decades.
With a population of around 30,000 Ilmenau is located at a height of 500m in the valley of the Ilm, which runs through the town, and is surrounded by mountains and gentle hills.
