Workshop 1: Metrology of machine tools and industrial robots geometry and compliance

Monday 30th May 2022
Room: Doha
Time: 14:00 – 17:00

Chairs: Prof. Andreas Archenti, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, SE and Prof. René Mayer, École Polytechnique de Montréal, CA

The pursuit to shape the world of tomorrow relies on the performance of advanced manufacturing machinery such as machine tools and industrial robots. Metrology is essential to continuously identify and improve their characteristics, guarantee operational performance at all time and support the digitization of the industries.

This workshop will cover the indirect measurement of geometric error addressing the methods, uncertainty, thermal dependence and compensation. It will also cover compliance testing and its use for the compensation of machine tools and industrial robots.

Keywords: Machine tool, Industrial robot, errors, compliance

Workshop chairs:

Workshop 2:  European framework for continuous professional development in precision engineering for advanced manufacturing (PREFAM)

Monday 30th May 2022
Room: Berlin
Time: 14:00 – 17:00

Chairs: Prof. Liam Blunt, University of Huddersfield, UK and Prof. Enrico Savio, University of Padova, IT

Agenda

14:00 -14:15  Welcome and presentation about PREFAM (Prof. Enrico Savio, University of Padova / Immediate Past President, euspen)

14:15-15:00  Web based Taster and Hand on Courses in Surface metrology and Machine Tool Metrology  (Prof. Liam Blunt, University of Huddersfield / Vice President, euspen)

In this session “Web based Taster and Hand on Courses in Surface metrology and Machine Tool Metrology”,  the session outlines the background to the course development covering the identified knowledge gap  and the needs for such courses. Following this the course structure, content and assessment protocols will be outlined. For the Surface Metrology course, examples a of both the face to face hands on courses and the on line web offerings will be given. This will cover data acquisition techniques, data filtering, surface characterization and examples of assessment.

15:00-15:15 Coffee break

15:15-16:00 Hands-on training on Precision Manufacturing in multiple locations (Dr. Guiliano Bissacco, DTU)

In the session of “hands-on training”, modern precision engineers need to develop a strong competence on a number of related subjects, including both theoretical and practical aspects. While theoretical aspects can be dealt with in classroom or remotely, competence on experimental topics require hands-on activities. In this session, the approach defined within the project PREFAM towards the development of hands-on itinerant courses on precision manufacturing is presented and an example of a pilot implementation is shown.

16:00-16:45 Soft-skills for working in multi-cultural environment (Dr. Jun Qian, KU Leuven)

In the session of “Soft-skills for working in multi-cultural environment, a short reflection of the course development progress will be given before the introduction of the major takeaways in the training course. The audience is excepted to receive an in depth view on the cultural difference in various regions and working environment, and more importantly to receive practical tips on how to build up a collaborative relationship with colleagues for a successful career in a multicultural working environment, including how to connect instantly with others, rapport building with trust, and assertive communication etc.

16:45-17:00 Q&A / Close

Prof. Liam Blunt

Professor Blunt has been involved in the development of the Centre for Precision Technologies since 1999. The Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) forms the centre piece of the research activity of the school of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield UK. The CPT is now the host of the UK research council funded “Future Metrology Hub”. Prof.  Blunt graduated from Coventry Polytechnic in 1985 and studied for a PhD in surface engineering which he completed in 1989. Following this, Prof Blunt worked at the University of Warwick as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow on superconductor microstructure manipulation. Prof. Blunt moved to The University of Birmingham in 1991 and became central to the development of the Centre for Metrology in the School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering. Prof Blunt gained a lectureship at Birmingham and established his reputation in the research field. In 1998 Prof Blunt moved to the University of Huddersfield to take up a Readership in Surface Metrology and began rebuild his now flourishing team in Yorkshire. He was awarded the Taylor Hobson Chair in surface metrology from 2002-2012 and has since established a world-renowned research team with Prof Xiang Jiang in Precision Engineering, Prof Blunt has published over 350 scientific papers during his academic career.
