GEO 600: Gravitational Wave Experiment

A tour at GEO 600 will take place
on Friday 2nd June 2017.

GEO600 is a ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detector located near Hannover, Germany. It is designed and operated by scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and the Leibniz Universität Hannover, along with partners in the United Kingdom, and is funded by the Max Planck Society and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). GEO600 is part of a worldwide network of gravitational wave detectors. Two detectors have been constructed in the USA (LIGO), and one each in Italy (Virgo) and Japan (KAGRA). Scientists from GEO600 and LIGO collaborate within the LIGO Scientific Collaboration(LSC). GEO600 scientists together with the Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) built the lasers for Advanced LIGO.

10:00Tour of the detector site, including visits to the central laboratory and the control room
11:15Open Questions and Farewell
11:30Transportation to Hannover Congress Centre
The GEO600 project aims at the direct detection of gravitational waves by means of a laser interferometer of 600 m armlength. Gravitational waves are extremely small ripples in the structure of spacetime caused by astrophysical events like supernovae or coalescing massive binaries (neutron stars, black holes). They have been predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 and have been first observed on September 14, 2015.

Hannover Centre for Production Technology, PZH

A tour of the Hannover Centre for Production Technology (PZH)  will take place on Friday 2nd June 2017.

The Hannover Centre for Production Technology (PZH) is, nationwide as well as internationally, one of the most important research centres for production engineering. Approximately 250 scientists, mostly with engineering and natural sciences backgrounds, research at the six Leibniz University institutes which comprise the PZH. Under the umbrella of the PZH, the scholars not only bring together their versatile disciplines for a successful interdisciplinary cooperation, they also make use of the engineering services provided by the TEWISS GmbH and by the many smaller production-related companies, some of which are spin-offs of the institutes themselves.
